Internal channel clogging is the #1 silent killer of MBBR performance.
When biofilm grows too thick inside carrier structures, or when inorganic solids and grease accumulate in internal cavities, you lose effective surface area — fast. Studies show severe clogging can reduce functional surface area by 40–60% within 18 months.
That's not a maintenance issue. That's a design failure.
Symptoms plant operators should watch for:
- Rising head loss across the biozone
- Declining ammonia removal despite normal DO
- Visible "dead zones" of dark, compacted carriers
- Uneven fluidization patterns
1. Control Influent TSS
Keep influent suspended solids below 100–150 mg/L. High TSS loads penetrate carrier internals and create inorganic scaling that's nearly impossible to reverse.
2. Design for Self-Regulation
Choose carriers with engineered internal geometries that create natural high-shear zones. These shear zones promote continuous biofilm sloughing — no backwashing required. Flat cylindrical designs with cross-structures remain the gold standard.
3. Maintain Proper Aeration
Uniform aeration prevents dead zones where carriers stagnate and accumulate solids. Target 2.5–4.0 mg/L DO with even air distribution across the tank floor.
4. Manage Fill Ratios
Don't overfill. Maximum 60% fill ratio for aerobic zones and 50% for anoxic zones. Excess carriers create friction, reduce mixing energy per carrier, and accelerate clogging.
5. Schedule Preventive Screening
Install fine screens (≤1mm aperture) upstream of MBBR tanks. Hair, fibers, and debris are the leading causes of channel blockage — and the easiest to prevent.
