At first glance, this seems logical:
More media = More surface area = Higher treatment efficiency
But in real industrial applications, excessive filling ratio can create serious operational risks.
When fill fraction becomes too high:
In severe cases, the system may even experience:
✖ Media accumulation
✖ Uneven biomass distribution
✖ Aeration short-circuiting
✖ Reduced effective biofilm activity
Industrial wastewater is especially sensitive because organic loading and viscosity are often much higher than municipal sewage.
This means hydraulic behavior inside the reactor becomes extremely important.
A successful MBBR design must balance:
✔ Biological capacity
✔ Oxygen transfer
✔ Mixing energy
✔ Carrier mobility
✔ Reactor hydraulics
The goal is not to maximize media quantity.
The goal is to maximize effective active biofilm under stable operating conditions.
Sometimes, reducing the fill ratio can actually improve overall treatment performance.
