The MBBR was develop in Norway at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the late 1980s. It is a type of wastewater treatment process. The MBBR system have an aeration tank with special plastic carriers and offer a surface where the biofilm can grow. The material density of the carriers is close to water density. So The carriers will be mixed in the tank by the aeration system and thus will have good contact between the substrate in the influent wastewater and the biomass on the carriers.
